Overview: Earth Day began in the United States in 1970 with 20 million participants. By 1990, it had gone global with 200 million participants. Prior to Covid, Earth Day had reached 1 BILLION PARTICIPANTS WORLDWIDE.

In their own words: EARTHDAY.ORG’s mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. Growing out of the first Earth Day in 1970, EARTHDAY.ORG is the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 75,000 partners in over 192 countries to drive positive action for our planet.

Model:

The Earth Day Network works on five core issues across 190 countries:

  1. Climate Action,
  2. Science and Education,
  3. People and Communities,
  4. Conservation and Restoration,
  5. Plastic and Pollution.

For the 2021 Earth Day, the EDN is streaming a three day event comprising the Youth Climate Summit, an Educational International summit, and the EDN’s own “Restore Our Earth” event, which mirrors the Biden administration’s Global Climate Summit.

Here at Eco Action, we love how the EDN’s celebration of environmental stewardship connects a large and diverse network of individuals and organizations.
